2 Stellar grating spectroscopy before 1900 Early experiments at using gratings for stellar spectroscopy met with frequent failures. Both Angelo Secchi in Rome in 1877 (with a Rutherfurd grating)  and Hermann Carl Vogel in Potsdam (with several gratings from Wanschaff in Berlin)  found that gratings were too inefficient for stellar work. Vogel made the interesting comment that gratings ruled on glass could then be silvered and these gave higher efficiency than those using speculum metal.
